Pan-fried fish for the Ukrainian Christmas Eve table

Fish daysPrep 15 minCook 20 minServes 6
When to eat it. Ukrainian and some Slavic families include fish at the Nativity Eve supper by custom. Greek practice keeps the eve strict, so follow your parish. Has fish, so keep it for fish days: the Annunciation, Palm Sunday, and Tuesdays, Thursdays and weekends in much of the Nativity Fast.

Ingredients

Method

  1. Season the fish and dredge in flour.
  2. Fry in hot oil 3 to 4 minutes per side until golden.
  3. Drain on paper.
  4. Serve with lemon and fried onion rings.

Tip. Carp is traditional, but any white fish works.

Fasting customs differ between churches and parishes. When in doubt, follow what your priest gives you. Not sure what today allows? Check the Orthodox calendar.
