How to set the first-day-of-Lent picnic

Wine & oil daysPrep 30 minCook 30 minServes 8
When to eat it. Clean Monday, the first day of Great Lent. Greeks go outdoors with a picnic and fly kites. Made with oil. Keep it for days when wine and oil are allowed, like weekends in Lent and most of the Nativity Fast.

Ingredients

Method

  1. Bake the lagana in the morning, or buy it from the bakery.
  2. Make the taramosalata and a bean dish the night before.
  3. Grill or boil the octopus or squid.
  4. Pack everything for a picnic outdoors, and bring a kite.

Tip. Strict keepers eat only bread and simple food on the first days. The picnic table is the common custom.

Fasting customs differ between churches and parishes. When in doubt, follow what your priest gives you. Not sure what today allows? Check the Orthodox calendar.
