Wine & oil daysPrep 20 minCook 2 hServes 6Plus overnight soaking
When to eat it. Made with oil. Keep it for days when wine and oil are allowed, like weekends in Lent and most of the Nativity Fast.

Ingredients

Method

  1. Boil the beans until just tender, about 1 hour. Drain, keeping some of the water.
  2. Cook the onions slowly in the oil for 20 minutes until soft and sweet. Stir in the paprika off the heat.
  3. Layer beans and onions in a baking dish with the bay leaves, season, and add cooking water to just cover the beans.
  4. Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 45 to 60 minutes until the top is browned.

Tip. Served on Serbian Christmas Eve, and a fasting staple all year.

Fasting customs differ between churches and parishes. When in doubt, follow what your priest gives you. Not sure what today allows? Check the Orthodox calendar.
