When to eat it. Made with oil. Keep it for days when wine and oil are allowed, like weekends in Lent and most of the Nativity Fast.
Ingredients
Method
- Whisk the oil and sugar, then the juice with the soda dissolved in it, and the zest.
- Add the baking powder and enough flour for a soft dough that doesn’t stick to your hands.
- Roll pieces into ropes, twist or coil them, and dip the tops in sesame.
- Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 18 to 20 minutes until lightly golden.
Tip. A good one to bake with kids for coffee hour after Liturgy.
Fasting customs differ between churches and parishes. When in doubt, follow what your priest gives you. Not sure what today allows? Check the Orthodox calendar.
